Postgrad Degrees for ARBUS Students

Understandably, navigating postgraduate life can be difficult and honestly, a little frightening. However, as an ARBUS student, there are many potential options to choose from due to the various majors and the additional business aspect of our program.

Below are some possible degrees that you, as an ARBUS student, may consider if you are interested in enrolling in postgraduate studies after your undergrad.

Master of Arts (MA)

At UW, there are 30 Art majors to choose from. For almost every major, there is a Master of Arts degree specialization for it. Below is a list of the graduate programs available for each major and the minimum grade admission requirement. For more information on admission requirements, please visit the UW website. Please note these are specific to UW, and other universities may have different requirements.

Anthropology (MA)

Program Length: 24 months

Admission Requirements: Honours Bachelor’s degree with a minimum 75% average and 78% in the Anthropology major

Students with at least 5 courses in Anthropology may also be admitted into the program if they were part of a major in another social science or humanities program

Classical Studies (MA)

Program Length: 24 months 

Admission Requirements: Honours Bachelor's degree in Classical Studies with an overall average of 78% in the final two years

Design Experience Innovation (MDEI) 

Program Length: 8 months 

Admission Requirements: Honours Bachelor's degree in humanities, social sciences, science, mathematics, environment, health, or engineering, with a minimum 78% average in the final two years

Program Length: 24 months, Co-op available

Admission Requirements: Honours bachelor's degree with a 75% average

English Language and Literature (MA)

  • Literary Studies

    • Program Length: 24 months, Co-op available

    • Admission Requirements: Honours Bachelor's degree in English with a minimum average of 78% in English courses, and at least 75% overall

Fine Arts (MFA)

Program Length: 24 months

Admission Requirements: Honours Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) with a 75% average or better

French (MA)

Program Length: 12 - 24 months 

Admission Requirements: Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in French with a cumulative average of 75% 


Germanic and Slavic Studies (MA)

Program Length: 24 months

Admission Requirements: Honours Bachelor's degree in German Studies or an Honours Bachelor's degree in the Humanities and Social Sciences with sufficient German proficiency; normally level B2

A minimum average of 78% overall in the final two years

Global Governance (MA)

Program Length: 16 months 

Admission Requirements: Honours Degree in Political Science, Economics, History, or a related field (including international, environmental, or global studies undergraduate degrees) with an overall average of at least 78% in the final 20 courses

Program Length: 24 months 

Admission Requirements: Honours Bachelor's degree in History with a 77% average based on the student's History courses in the last two years of undergraduate study, excluding any first-year level courses which may have been taken during those two years

Peace and Conflict Studies (MPACS)

Program Length: 20 months

Admission Requirements: Four-year undergraduate degree (a variety of disciplines permitted) with a minimum average of at least 75% in the final 20 courses

Philosophy (MA)

Program Length: 12-24 months

Admission Requirements: Honours Bachelor of Arts degree with a minimum average of 78%

Political Science (MA)

Program Length: 24 months, Co-op available

Admission Requirements: Honours Bachelor's degree in Political Science with a minimum average of 78%

Psychology (MA)

Admission Requirements: Honours Bachelor's degree in Psychology with a minimum average of 80% in the final two years

  • Development and Communication Science (MASc)

    • Program Length: 24 months 

    • Admission Requirements: Honours Bachelor's degree in Psychology or related, approved equivalent (e.g., Linguistics, Computer Science)

    • 80% minimum average in the final two years


Master of Public Service (MPS)

UW also offers a Master of Public Service for individuals who would like to pursue a career in public service, possibly working for the Government of Canada.

  • Program Length: 12 months

  • Admission Requirements: Honours Bachelor's degree with a minimum average of 75% in the final two years


Master of Business Administration (MBA)

Due to the unique business aspect of the ARBUS program, you may also consider pursuing an MBA. An MBA will cover various business-related topics such as business communication, human resources, entrepreneurship, marketing, economics, finance, etc. Although UW does not offer an MBA program, there are 45 MBA programs available across Canada.


Master of Business, Entrepreneurship, and Technology (MBET)

UW does not offer an MBA program, however, they do offer a similar Business related master's program known as MBET. This program is offered at the Conrad School of Entrepreneurship and Business providing experiential, hands-on learning. The main focus of this program is the entrepreneurial aspects of business subjects such as Leadership, Marketing, Finance, Accounting, and Strategy. 

  • Program Length: 12 months

  • Admission Requirements: Honours Bachelor's degree with a minimum average of 75% 


Juris Doctor (JD)

Another possible schooling to pursue post-grad is law school. Law school does not require a specific undergrad degree before applying, therefore, even if you are not studying legal studies, political science, or a law-related degree, law school can still remain an option. Canada has 18 English-language law schools, with 8 located in Ontario. 

To apply to law school, you must first write the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) as required for admission. After 3 years of law school, you will graduate with a Juris Doctor, a first-level common law degree in Canada. A JD is still considered an undergraduate degree despite needing prior undergraduate education.

If becoming a teacher is one of your career paths, an ARBUS degree can be used to apply for a teacher's college. To become a certified teacher, you must:

It is important to note that this is only a small portion of potential postgrad degrees to consider. There are many more options out there that go beyond this list. If you are really considering pursuing a postgraduate degree, do not be scared to reach out to your academic advisor to discuss your options.

Remember, not everyone needs or may want to pursue a postgrad after their undergrad, if it is not for you, that’s okay. There are plenty of options out there to further your professional and personal development, whether it is school or not.
